or before an audience (simultaneous), as in the case of lectures, speeches

What is consecutive interpretation?
Consecutive interpretation is used in bi-directional or multi-directional communication
environments, especially during conversations or interviews involving several participants.
The interpreter translates complete statements made by the speaker(s) into the
language(s) of the other participants. Logically, the rate of communication is considerably
slower than normal. 
What is simultaneous interpretation?
Simultaneous interpretation is used in one-way communication environments, especially
in situations where a speaker is addressing an audience. .
The interpreter listens to the speaker using headphones and dictates the translation
into a microphone. Audience members use headphones to listen to the interpretation in
the target language desired. If the audience members all speak the same language, the
interpretation is heard over the room's sound system. Here, the rate of communication
is close to normal.
Is a specific type of system or equipment necessary?
Simultaneous interpretations require the
use of interpretation booths, ONE FOR EACH TARGET LANGUAGE. Additionally, there
should be at least ONE SOUND TECHNICIAN present at all times to install, supervise
and provide support for the electronic systems used.

Can I request a CERTIFIED interpretation?
Of course; this is similar to requesting a certified translation.
