Localization
TO LOCALIZE A PRODUCT is to adapt it to the language, cultural values, shared symbols, technical regulations, legal requirements and even the commercial expectations of its target markets. If a product is localized during the design phase, this is also called internationalization.

This concept is vital to the success of your business--before selling products or services in other markets, they should be localized for those markets. This is the new challenge of the global economy, and Orchestra will be your most valuable partner in SOFTWARE AND WEBSITE LOCALIZATION in meeting that challenge.

Keep in mind that LOCALIZATION is a project, NOT A TRANSLATION WITH A FEW «EXTRAS». It is a complex, delicate process. Your software or website must meet strict linguistic, cultural, technical and legal levels to triumph in the new global marketplace. To do this, rigorous engineering, design and translation work is necessary.

What does SOFTWARE localization consist of?
Software localization consists of adapting the functionality, user interface, printed material, online help and multimedia components of a software to the characteristics of its target markets. The three actions are to be taken are:
  1. Translation of text strings, menus, dialogs, etc.
  2. Transcription of cultural elements that may be seen as offensive or inappropriate, misinterpreted or even irrelevant for certain markets.
  3. Re-engineering of softwarefor example, adapting numeric components (date formats, numbers, currency), resizing dialog boxes, double-byte enabling, changing the direction in which text is written, etc. Arriba

What are the specific elements in localizing WEBSITES?

In addition to the general aspects of localization, some of the specific elements in localizing websites are:
  • Adjusting link addresses: Once the pages are localized, the access/entry hyperlinks should be implemented from the first page, paying special attention to the relative links.
  • Editing of the correct set of characters using HTML tools specifically for double-byte alphabets or extended ASCII.
  • Graphics processing: Operating selectively over certain file layers.
  • Other elements of software engineering: In the analysis phase, the “localizability” of certain advanced technologies will be evaluated such as Java, JavaScript, VisualBasic Script, CGI/Perl, clickable image maps, Shockwave, RealAudio, as well as file and path name conventions, the preprocessing of files sent by email, etc. Arriba
